Mineral

Mineral editor

Crystalline percussion: struck tones whose partials sit on a geometric lattice - each partial is the previous one times Ratio, the inharmonic series of struck glass, bells and gamelan metal. Geometry as timbre.

Parameters

FacetsHow many partials the crystal grows (1-12). Few and it is a struck bar; many and it fills out into a bell.
RatioThe lattice constant. 2.0 = octaves (organ-pure); the golden 1.62 = classic bell inharmonicity; lower = clustered, metallic.
GeometryHands Ratio to the facet count: the crystal takes the lattice its own shape implies, the diagonal of a regular polygon over its side. Five facets give the golden 1.618 - which is where Mineral has always sat - and every side after that climbs closer to the octave without ever arriving, so the crystal grows more harmonic as it grows more faces. Off by default, and the Ratio knob dims while it is on.
ShineLevel slope across facets - dull to glassy.
DecayRing time; higher facets always die faster, as real plates do.
StrikeThe contact transient (a snap of noise).
ShimmerDetunes each facet slightly differently left and right, so the crystal beats across the stereo field.

MIDI-driven, four voices: sequence it from a PianoRoll or DNA, or play it with the QWERTY keyboard while its editor is focused.

The sigil

The mark on the left of the editor is the synthesis model drawn live: the gem has one side per facet (+2), stretches with Ratio, gleams with Shine, doubles its image with Shimmer, trails with Decay, flashes on a strike and breathes with the output level. What you hear is what it shows.
