A volume knob on a wire: boosts or attenuates whatever passes through, with a Mute button for killing the output outright.
Use it to trim a signal into a sensible range before an effect, to ride the level of one branch of a patch, or as a simple kill switch. When you need per-input levels on several signals at once, use a Mixer instead; when the level should be driven by a control signal (an LFO, a Follower), use a VCA.
