6. Timeline and capture

Goal: the full story of the button from lesson 0. Capture a performance, cut it, and reperform the parts you want to change without touching the audio you played.

You leave with: a captured take, split and rearranged, with one knob move redrawn.

Two ideas

The audio is the anchor and the gestures are editable. Capture records the master mix as an audio bed, and every gesture - a knob, a controller, the Metapad cursor, the notes - as lanes beside it. Edit a lane and it drives its knob again over the same bed.

You never arm anything. Capture starts it; Keep the Last 8 Bars keeps what already happened.

Steps

  1. Capture. Press the round button. Right-click it first for a count-in or a pre-roll under Before recording, or to pick Touch or Latch under Automation write.
  2. Perform lesson 4's patch for a minute: knobs, the Metapad, a few notes.
  3. Stop. One undo step lands on the timeline: the bed clip, one lane per knob you moved, the morph path, the MIDI.
  4. Scrub. Drag the playhead. Every knob snaps to where it was.
  5. Cut. Right-click the timeline, Cut at Playhead. Move the second half before the first, and drag a clip edge to trim.
  6. Reperform. Open a track's fold arrow and drag a point on the Cutoff lane. Play it back: same audio, new sweep.
  7. Record one organism. The + above the tracks, Audio Track. Cord Grit into it, arm its R box, and play.
  8. Convert to MIDI. Right-click an audio clip, Convert to MIDI Track, and cord the new track into Rhizome.
  9. Meter. Click the meter chip and pick 7/8 for the last bars.
