7. Video live

Goal: pictures in the same patch as the sound, reacting to it, leaving on a second screen.

You leave with: a camera and a clip pad mixed through a shader that paints the audio, on a projector.

The video organisms

All in the Visual category, all wired with video cords:

  • CameraIn - a camera as a source.
  • VideoPlayer - one tape looped into the chain.
  • VideoPad - eight clip pads with a dissolve between launches.
  • VideoTrack - a video track on the timeline: plays its clips against the transport and records what reaches it.
  • VideoFX - position, scale, rotation, colour, mosaic.
  • Lumen - a shader compositor that paints the audio it hears over the video layers under it.
  • VideoMix - an A/B crossfader for two feeds.
  • VideoOut - the window or display where the picture leaves the patch.

Every knob on them is an ordinary parameter: an LFO, a Follower or the Metapad moves a video knob exactly as it moves a filter.

Steps

  1. VideoOut first. Add it and open its window with the button beside its Screen menu. A black frame.
  2. CameraIn into VideoOut. Your face.
  3. VideoPad. Drop eight clips on the pads and launch them; watch the dissolve.
  4. VideoMix. Camera on A, pads on B, and the crossfader mapped to a hardware knob from lesson 5.
  5. Lumen. Cord the master audio into its two audio inlets and the mix into its first video inlet. Leave Scene empty for the built-in scene, or give it a shader file; the picture moves with the kick.
  6. VideoFX between the pads and the mix, with a Follower on its scale.
  7. The projector. Cord Lumen into a second VideoOut and set its Screen to Display 2: fullscreen on the projector, while the first stays a window on your laptop.
  8. Capture as usual. A VideoTrack records what reaches its inlet, in the same take as the audio.

Shot list

  1. VideoOut's window opening, black.
  2. The camera cord landing, the picture appearing.
  3. Clips dropped on the pads, launched, the dissolve.
  4. VideoMix's fader on a hardware knob, A to B.
  5. Lumen wired, the built-in scene pulsing with the kick, then a shader file dropped in.
  6. VideoFX's scale following the kick.
  7. A second VideoOut set to Display 2, the room screen lighting up.
  8. Capture, the video track filling alongside the bed.
